AdminEdson Alvarez is set to return to the West Ham squad, but his comeback could create another selection headache for Nuno Espirito Santo, particularly for Songoutou Magassa.
The situation surrounding two of West Ham’s most recognisable midfielders this season has been difficult to understand. Both players were initially expected to leave, only for their situations to change before speculation surfaced again.
Neither featured during pre-season, although there were understandable reasons. Magassa was recovering from injury, while Alvarez returned late following his involvement at the World Cup.
Between them, they have managed just one appearance this campaign. Alvarez started the opening game before disappearing from the squad, while Magassa has only recently returned to the bench and has yet to feature.
Reports claimed both players were pushing for moves during the transfer window. Magassa later apologised for trying to force an exit, and his return to the bench suggested he was back in contention.
Alvarez, meanwhile, could be reintegrated ahead of next Friday’s clash with QPR. However, West Ham’s midfield is already packed.
Engels and Mukasa are currently first choice, with Kante, Orford, Lamadrid and the returning Soucek also competing for minutes.
Alvarez could move ahead of Orford and Lamadrid, but Magassa’s position is less certain. With limited places available, the Frenchman could find himself regularly left out.
Come January, the 22-year-old may once again consider his future.
