Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson has claimed Sven Botman nearly broke his leg during Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat, after the defender escaped with a yellow card following a dangerous challenge.
Botman was investigated by VAR in the 18th minute after lunging into a tackle on the Senegalese international. However, the on-field decision to show a yellow card was upheld.
The Premier League Match Centre confirmed: “#NEWAVL – 17’ The referee’s call of yellow card to Botman for the challenge on Jackson was checked and confirmed by VAR.
REF: “I think it’s reckless. Even though you get a touch on the ball, it’s still reckless”.
Jackson was left frustrated by the decision, insisting the challenge could have caused a serious injury.
“I’m good. I know the referee said yellow card but it was so high and hopefully maybe next time a red card, but it was a yellow.

“I nearly broke my leg but anyway it’s part of football. The most important thing is we win and we won so I’m OK and he [Manzambi] is OK.”
Villa eventually secured all three points thanks to Johan Manzambi’s first-half strike, leaving Newcastle with back-to-back Premier League defeats following their 4-1 loss at Coventry City.
The Magpies have now gone 16 league matches at St James’ Park without keeping a clean sheet, raising further concerns over their defensive struggles.
“It was a difficult game,” Jackson added. “We know St James’ Park is very difficult to play but we got three points and we’re very happy to win here.”
