West Ham United’s summer transfer plans remain unclear following the significant boardroom announcement involving Daniel Kretinsky and the Gold family.
While the club has publicly stated its desire to “retain key players”, achieving that goal may prove difficult under the Championship’s new Squad Cost Ratio regulations, which restrict clubs from spending more than 85 per cent of their income on wages.

The wage reduction clauses triggered by relegation have eased some financial pressure, but they also create fresh challenges.
With many players now earning considerably less, agents are expected to explore opportunities for their clients to return to the Premier League, where salaries are substantially higher.
Before the latest developments in the boardroom, West Ham appeared likely to focus on free transfers and loan signings.
That approach has long been favoured by relegated clubs seeking experienced Championship performers capable of handling the demands of a gruelling 46-game season.
Reports linking the Hammers with free-agent defender Dael Fry pointed towards that strategy. Further evidence has now emerged, with Inside Futbol reporting:
“West Ham United hold an interest in free agent defender Danilho Doekhi and could even offer him a non-promotion clause to persuade him to join”.
The same report added:
“West Ham are actively working to recruit quality players who will help them get promoted and they are suggested to be competing with Rangers for [ former Sunderland midfielder] Dan Neil’s signature. Neil is another player who is a free agent this summer, which suits West Ham’.
A blend of existing Premier League-quality talent, smart free-agent acquisitions and carefully selected loan signings appears the most practical route forward.
However, until a senior recruitment figure is appointed, supporters can only wait to see how the club’s new leadership shapes the rebuild.
