Russell Martin has offered an encouraging assessment of Wout Faes after spending his first few weeks working with the Leicester City defender, insisting the Belgian has made an excellent impression since the start of pre-season.
Faes has faced criticism during his time at the King Power Stadium, but Martin believes it is far too early to judge players on what has happened in previous seasons. Instead, the new Leicester boss is focusing solely on what he has seen since arriving at the club.
Speaking about the centre-back, Martin praised both his attitude and his influence around the training ground, highlighting the role he has played in helping younger members of the squad settle into the manager’s demanding methods.
Martin said: “I’m trying to learn about the players. I can’t judge from what’s gone on, I can only judge from what I’ve seen in two-and-a-half weeks.

He’s been an unbelievable professional. Really dedicated, helps the young guys in every session and he’s a really good football player.”
The comments are a significant vote of confidence for Faes ahead of the new campaign.
With Leicester continuing to prepare for life under Martin, the defender appears to have earned the trust of his manager through his commitment, leadership and performances on the training pitch.
If Faes can carry that form into the Championship season, he could become an important figure in Martin’s plans as Leicester look to challenge at the top of the table.
