Paul Merson angrily slams these Aston Villa players for letting the team down and makes this comment that surprised everyone.

Paul Merson has defended Unai Emery following Aston Villa’s draw against Hull City, insisting the manager cannot be held responsible for the chances his players failed to convert.

Villa were held to a draw despite dominating large parts of the game, with several clear-cut opportunities going begging in front of goal.

For Merson, the result should not completely overshadow what he believes was a promising performance from Emery’s side.

“Completely appreciate that we shouldn’t settle for a point away at Hull, however…”

Merson acknowledged that Villa should have been looking for all three points, but believes their dominance and chance creation offered plenty of encouragement.

“We dominated HUGE parts of the game yesterday, and we had 3/4 really really good opportunities that were wasted in front of goal/missed”

The former Arsenal midfielder also rejected suggestions that Emery should take responsibility for his players’ poor finishing.

“You can’t blame Emery for players missing guilt edge chances.”

Villa still have plenty of work to do, particularly with several important players currently sidelined through injury. However, Merson believes their eventual returns could significantly strengthen the team.

“Still plenty of work to do, of course, BUT also 4/5 key first team players we’re waiting to come back from injury.”

For now, Merson feels there are enough positives for Villa to build on.
