Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry about Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen as they continue their search for defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes.
United are understood to be targeting two positions in the final days of the window, with a new left-back and striker both on their agenda.
However, their pursuit of a forward could depend on Joshua Zirkzee leaving Old Trafford.
Fiorentina have reportedly offered €5m to take the Dutch striker on loan, with the proposal also including an option to make the move permanent. United must now decide whether to accept the offer.
At left-back, concerns remain over Luke Shaw’s ability to cope with three matches per week across a demanding campaign. United’s return to European football has increased the number of fixtures they will face.

Lewis Hall remains their preferred target, but Newcastle are reluctant to sell after already losing several key players this summer. Ben Jacobs has suggested United could revisit a deal for Hall in a future window.
For now, however, United are exploring alternatives, with journalist Pete O’Rourke claiming Maatsen has emerged as an option.
He wrote: ‘Manchester United have made an enquiry for Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen as they search to bring in a new left-back.’
Maatsen has started Villa’s opening two games this season, although Matteo Ruggeri’s arrival from Atletico Madrid could alter the situation.
