Niclas Füllkrug has made a flying start to his loan spell at Werder Bremen after leaving West Ham United during the summer transfer window.

The German striker joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 for a reported €30 million, but his time in London never went according to plan.

Despite registering 15 goals and 10 assists for Dortmund, Füllkrug managed only three goals and two assists in 20 appearances during his first season at West Ham.

His second campaign proved even more difficult. The 33-year-old failed to score or provide an assist in nine appearances before being sent to AC Milan on loan in January. However, his struggles continued in Italy, with just one goal in 20 games.

After returning to West Ham, Füllkrug was loaned to Werder Bremen following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

He has already scored four goals in five appearances, matching his combined tally for West Ham and AC Milan.

Speaking to SportBild, Füllkrug explained why his spell in England proved so difficult.

“You only need to look at my medical history: I suffered a lot, but almost never because of muscle injuries.

I can’t really explain why things went so badly for me at West Ham. England just isn’t the right fit for me, either as a player or as an athlete,” he said.

“Now I just hope everything stays the way it is.”
