Aston Villa have been hit by a double injury blow ahead of their final pre-season friendly, with two important players set to miss the opening weeks of the new campaign.
The setbacks will be particularly frustrating for Unai Emery, with both players impressing throughout Villa’s preparations and establishing themselves as key performers during pre-season.
João Gomes is expected to be unavailable for at least the next two weeks after suffering a calf strain during Villa’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The midfielder had played an important role during pre-season and his absence leaves Emery with another concern heading into the opening fixtures.
Brian Madjo faces an even longer spell on the sidelines. According to The Athletic, the forward is not expected to return until September at the earliest, although the exact nature of his injury has not yet been confirmed.

The pair join a growing injury list at Villa Park. Emi MartÃnez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins have yet to feature during pre-season after receiving a four-week break following the World Cup.
Johan Manzambi is also recovering from a knee injury, while Alejandro Garnacho has been following concussion protocols after the clash with PSG.
Amadou Onana remains sidelined after suffering an ACL injury at the World Cup and could miss most, if not all, of next season.
Villa are exploring a loan replacement, with João Palhinha a leading target, although Bayern Munich currently prefer a permanent sale.
