Nuno Espírito Santo’s biggest priority during the international break should be addressing West Ham United’s defensive problems, with the Hammers having shown worrying signs at the back in recent matches.

West Ham have conceded five goals this week, and the frustrating part is that each of them could arguably have been avoided.

The goals have largely come from moments when defenders switched off, failed to track runners or were caught out of position.

While the Hammers have continued to show plenty of threat in attack, their defensive frailties are becoming increasingly difficult to overlook.

The attacking players have produced enough quality to keep the team competitive, but relying on goals at the other end to compensate for mistakes at the back is unlikely to be a sustainable approach throughout the season.

The upcoming break therefore gives Nuno a valuable opportunity to work with his defensive unit and address the problems that have surfaced.

Organisation, concentration and communication will all need to improve if West Ham are to become more consistent.

One supporter summed up the situation bluntly: “Nuno’s biggest priority for the break has to be working on our defence.”

The message is clear. West Ham cannot afford to keep giving opponents avoidable opportunities, especially if they want to challenge strongly in the Championship. Their attack may continue to rescue them on occasions, but the defence must improve significantly.
